The self-styled “Chief dish and bottle washer” is, in many ways the heart and soul of the Oteri’s Bakery family. In the early 1970s, also at age 13, “Jimmy” started at Oteri’s as a weekend dishwasher. Picking up tidbits about the bakery from Thomas and others, in 1974, Jimmy progressed to full time baking apprentice. As all apprentices do, he learned from the masters of the craft, gaining knowledge in every aspect of the business. Soon, each time someone would quit or retire, Thomas, confident that Jimmy knew everyone’s job, would say, “That’s OK, Jimmy’ll do it!” Jimmy took on ever more responsibility with time until, rather than working under others, he supervised staff that worked for him. Today, after over 40 years, Jimmy knows every facet of the business, from baking to decoration to wholesale. He is truly a jack-of-all-trades at Oteri’s.
