I know there are a zillion sugar cookie dough recipes out there, and everyone has a favorite, but this one is definitely a keeper!
1 cup butter (unsalted)
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup buttermilk
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
About 3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
Optional: For extra flavor and zing add a bit of lemon zest
Cream shortening then blend in sugar. Add slightly beaten egg and vanilla. Dissolve soda in buttermilk and add to creamed mixture. Sift together 2 cups flour, salt and baking powder. Add to mixture. Add enough more flour so that dough will roll easily on lightly floured board. Dough may be chilled 1 hour or longer, if desired, to make handling easier with less flour. (Too much flour will make cookies tough.) Roll thin, cut with floured Christmas shaped cookie cutters into desired shapes. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 400 degrees 8 to 10 minutes. Do not over brown. Decorate with your favorite colored sugar, sprinkles; frosting (only frost when cool) Makes 6 dozen
